Shopbop was established in November 1999 by Bob Lamey, Martha Graettinger, and venture investor Ray Zemon in Madison, Wisconsin. Initially, it served as the online extension of the physical clothing retailer Bop, located in downtown Madison, which ceased operations in 2014. Graettinger and Lamey selected Madison due to its status as a college town with a robust, fashion-conscious student demographic. In February 2006, Amazon.com acquired Shopbop. At the time of the acquisition, Shopbop was offering 103 distinct lines of high-end apparel. Following the acquisition, Shopbop operated largely independently from Amazon, which also retails clothing and accessories, and even found itself in competition with the retail giant.
